THE SLIDE RULES

   (English version)

Instructions for use of the mathematical logarithmic slide rules, reinforced concrete and special, with many examples of calculus

This book could not be missing in the library of the researcher, of the curious, of everyone who wants to deepen its own knowledge on the instruments of scientific calculus of the past and also to surprise with a special gift.

Historical references.
The first astronomical instrument
(Antikythera, Anticitera, Andikithira, Antykithera, ANTIKYΘHPA, Αντικύθηρα)  was found in fragments among the rests of a submerged ship and goes back to the 1st century b.C. (from "Historia tou Ellenikou Ethnous", Athenon 1974). (Archimeds' Orrery ).
The astronomical calculus in the XVI century before and then the new-born scientific calculus in the XVII century demanded the quick resolution of the multiplication and division of very small or very big numbers. The advent of logarithms transformed the complex operations of products and quotients into simpler additions and subtractions.
The invention of logarithms is due to Jost Burgi (1552-1632) and Lord John Napier (latinized Nepero), Baron of Merchiston (1550-1617). The simplification operated by Henry Briggs (1556-1630) and the invention of logarithms allowed the realization of the first slide rules as an instruments of calculation. Logarithms have determined an incomparable revolution in the scientific calculation until the advent of the digital calculation and the electronic computer.
Edmund Gunter (1581-1626) was the first to propose, in 1624, “a calculating line” where some segments were reported. These segments started from one origin and were of a length which was proportional to the logarithms of the registered numbers: with the use of compass it was possible to carry out the multiplication and the division of the numbers.
Wingate and William Oughtred
(1574-1660), respectively in 1628 and 1630, proposed to engrave the same scale on two rules slide one next to the other. That made the use of compass unnecessary and gave the slide rule the current shape.
The logarithmic slide rule, which was born during the European Scientific Renaissance, developed soon also thanks to the demands of scientific and and technical calculation of the first industrial Revolution. In fact, for almost two centuries the slide rule has been used very little. At the end of  the XVIII century James Watt (1736-1819) revalued its importance. Consequently the demand was such that it had to be made in series. From 1850 it had such a great development that it totally supplanted the use of Galilean compass of proportions, which was intended for military use.
Victor Mayer Amédée Mannheim (1831-1906), in 1851, introduced a transparent slab movable cursor; other modifications and improvements were introduced by Dennert (1886), Cox (1897), Beghin (1899), Furle (1899), Schweth (1901), Rietz (1902), Walther from the Politechnic of Darmstadt (1936).
The logarithmic slide rule was first introduced in Italy in 1850 by Quintino Sella (1827-1884), a Minister, a mountain climber and an engineer from Biella. His “Theory and Practice of slide rules” was first edited in 1859 by ed. Stamperia Reale, Turin.
The logarithmic slide rule is an analogic calculator as it works on analogic quantities which vary with continuità. It was first made in wood, ivory, bamboo, plastic material and in metal; it was made in several dimensions, with linear, circular (mathematical ruing), cylindrical shapes. It was then used  in every field of science and technology thanks to several versions adapted to the different technical disciplines.
Slide rules were used for the calculation of the most different mathematical functions (from roots to exponentials, from logarithms to trigonometrical functions); they were also fit to resolve specific calculations; aeronautical, electrotechnics, topography,  chemistry, concrete, mechanics, plant engineering, commercial, etc.
Until the ‘70s slide rules have been the only instruments of mass scientific calculation, consequently becoming the symbol of technology and scientific calculation. Slide rules have been “the tools of the trade” for many engineers, mathematicians and physicists, but with the advent of pocket calculation, more comfortable and precise, they have quickly been forgotten appearing today as mysterious objects to the engineers of our generation.

.
PRIVATE COLLECTION OF SLIDE RULES

The slide rules which I have collected so far are listed in the table below. The collection is intended as a personal contribution to the rediscovery of these old instruments. Up to thirty years ago slide rules were used to measure bridges, buildings, ships, airplanes, cars and many other products of science and technology.
The first American and Russian space vehicles, up until the moon landing, were designed mainly using slide rules. Apollo 11, which for the first time ever, in July 1969, brought man on the Moon , had slide rules (Pickett) on board.
Slide rules are not just objects from the past: some are still being manufactured and applied in the aircraft, system and technical fields. Many manufacturers of machines and systems, in their calculations, along with software on CD ROM, also use slide rules, mainly made in plastic.
Other programs are currently being studied. I personally believe  that slide rules are both a historical memory and a “dedicated” instrument of calculation, that is an instrument to be used together with the digital  calculation. Because of its intrinsic peculiarities, particularly when a remarkable precision of the calculation is not required, the slide rule is perfect for quick calculations: it does not demand electricity; it does not require the use of diagrams and tables; it is pocket-size and easy to use.
Near the Department of Mathematics of “La Sapienza” University of Rome, has been constituted the
Museum of Mathematics where many slide rules are exhibited.

ANTIKYTHERA CALCULATOR ADVANCES MODERN SCIENCE OF NINETEEN CENTURIES

ABSTRACT - The Greek astronomic calculator, discovered in the deepness of the sea in a naval wreckage of the I century B.C. in front of the island of Antikythera, is the most amazing among the archaeological discoveries of last century. The mechanism, immediately appeared like a device out of its time, after years of study, is provoking a discussion between scientists and archeologists because of the complexity and the modernity of the scientific acquaintances the work presupposes. Its epicyclic gearings show the high level of the scientific culture reached in that period.
The knowledge of the planetary motion, necessary to the design of the epicyclic gearing of the Calculator of Antikythera, makes to presume that any greeks scientists knew the planetary motion of the celestial bodies and could have achieved the same results reached in modern era.
The scientific value of this gear mechanism is indisputable because the inventor of the Calculator of Antikythera could have anticipated of 19 centuries the results of the universal gravitation law formulated by Isaac Newton in the 1687 (Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica), that anticipated and used the heliocentric theory proposed by Niccolò Copernico in the 1543 (De revolutionibus orbium coelestium), and anticipated the kinematic study of the epicyclic gearings published by Robert Willis in 1841 (Principles of mechanism).
Consequently, with the proof of the use of epicycloidal model in the building up of the Calculator of Antikythera and with the kinematic analogies compared, it is advisable that the ideas of the modern and contemporary scientists (Cartesio, Kant, Laplace, Weizsäcker and asserted in these years by the observations of the spacial telescope Hubble) on the origin and the birth of the universe, result to be still older of many centuries.
The discovery of the Gear of Olbia backdates of at least two centuries the technical-scientific-astronomic knowledge that the Calculator of Antikythera implies.

The author is at Universities, Schools and Institutions disposal, to agree upon the dates on explicit invitation, to present with lectures, conferences and seminars the results of the studies till now achieved.
